New EU Constitution

June 7 - The Daily Telegraph proposes A healthy Constitution which sounds somewhat familiar on first read.

I especially like this part:

VIII Any uncertainty arising from ambiguities in this Treaty shall be resolved in favour of the individual citizen rather than the state, and of national governments rather than European institutions.

1 The big problem with that idea ever happening is it gives the Eurocrats absolutely nothing they want.

2 Yeah, life really sucks when you're a Euro-elite who wants to rule behind a screen of unelected, unaccountable bureaucrats and the people have the effrontery to vote against your grand design. And then some newspaper proposes a new one that is so short and simple that every one can read and comprehend it. Maybe de Villepin will set it in free verse.

3 Well, the thing about tossing around alternative constitutional language is not any expectation that it could really happen, but rather making the point that alternatives are POSSIBLE, i.e., the current status quo and tired, conventional way of thinking aren't fixed in stone.

4 I think they were also making the point the original monstrously huge document was a joke. I'm not sure if this is true or not since I haven't read the thing but I read in some blog the doc starts out with something like "By the grace of the king of Belgium" - right there is the first hint it's a complete farce.

5 Jay, since it's a treaty, it starts with the contracting parties, and Belgium is first alphabetically. But yes, anything that starts with "His Majesty, Albert II, King of the Belgians" is bound only to get worse from there. Doesn't exactly have the ring of "We The People," now does it?
