You can't make this stuff up

June 23 - Some quick hits: Charles Krauthammer pays tribute to our kick-ass cousins in Why I Love Australia. Do they show Australia Rules Football in the U.S.? The game is tough and gritty with daz-za-ling-ly dressed refs.

CBC execs try damage control (I know what you're thinking and no, Don Cherry didn't say anything that freaked out the Perennially Panties-in-a-Bunch Crowd):

CBC programming executives scrambled to do damage control yesterday in the wake of a firestorm that erupted after fans of The National learned that the flagship newscast would be bumped eight nights this summer for an American Idol knockoff reality show.

After announcing The National's schedule shift yesterday, The Globe and Mail received 50 e-mail messages from readers from readers enraged that the Peter Mansbridge-led news hour would be pushed back to 11 p.m. on Tuesdays, starting July 18 and ending the first week of September. (Emphasis added)

Kind of gives you an idea as to the size of CBC's loyal viewership.

N.B.: The Globe and Mail requires free registration. (Links via Newsbeat1.)

John Hawkins lists the Worst People in America as selected by bloggers and also his own selections and brief reasons for his picks -- and reminded me of some people I'd forgotten to despise. Only one of my picks didn't make it: Maureeen Dowd.

Attila girl wants silly pictures:

Send me pix if you want to participate: I'm interested in the silliest examples you've seen of cell phone towers dressed up to look like something else.
Ever wish al Zarqawi's Mom kept a blog? Hey, this is the internet, where all your secret fantasies are realized (via Kate.)

Ace highlights some reviews of the Badonkadonk Land Cruiser/Tank affectionately (?) nicknamed "Donk."

And, in case you were worried about Saddam (cue dramatic music) he's ended his hunger strike after missing one whole meal. Damn. I was really conflicted: force-feed him or just let him starve to death?

Don't Pester the Teacher: Tony Snow did some great stick handling with Helen Thomas during today's White House briefing that included questions about the latest NY Times breach of national security story about the program to track money sent from al Qaeda operatives to and from the U.S. (I wonder how much President Bush's approval ratings will go up this time? Seems to me that, if the people at the NYT really wanted to hurt the Republican administration, they wouldn't print these stories. But what do I know?)

The other Snow, Treasury Secretary John Snow, also held a news conference on the program.

I just don't get it. You have a gaggle of reporters just dying to break a Watergate-type story, yet somebody has to explain to them about "follow the money" to track down wrong-doing? That was covered in the movie, wasn't it?

President Bush and Gen. Pace attended a T-Ball game today. The things you have to do when you're president ...

I need to get myself off to work (One. More. Night.)

1 Some interesting talk between opposites stopping for a drink on a jeep ride through bush roads and small towns in Lebanon. Michael Totten with friends and strangers. ===== Firas and Joe went into the store and rummaged through the refrigerator. They came back with four green bottles of locally brewed Almaza beer with the caps already popped. "Cheers!" Firas said and we clinked our bottles and began to drink. "Tell me something, guys," Joe said. “Lots of Americans come here and think we like Hezbollah. Why? We hate Hezbollah!” I tried to explain that most Americans don't know much about Lebanon, just as most Lebanese don't know much about the U.S. Some Americans who do go to Lebanon can’t quite believe that Sunni Muslims and Druze have as hard a time with Hezbollah as the Christians. It just doesn't compute. "Do you guys want peace with Israel then?" I said. "So the embassy sent you!" Joe only half-jokingly said. “Making peace between states is not the same as making peace between people," Firas said. "We may be sitting here as friends at this moment, but I am thinking of the time in the future when I will kill you.” Then he checked himself. “I am not talking about us, this is just a general example of what sometimes happens.” “Why do we have to be at war with Israel all the time?” Joe said to Firas. "Don't say it, dude," Firas said. “I know people from the south who did very well under the Israeli occupation," Joe said. "They made money, they were safe, and they were happy. Under Hezbollah it is hell.” “Those are just personal stories,” Firas said. “Don’t believe everything you read, dude,” Joe said. Firas took off his shirt, walked over to the jeep, and pulled out a rifle. “Shoot this gun,” he said and tried to hand it over to Dan. ====== Nobody gets shot, he just wants to fire the rifle towards the mountain. They do and someone not far away yells a protest. They make it clear that everyone has rifles. From: www.MichaelTotten.com TG Test comments 23:27 P.Time

2 This is an interesting post touching on many topics. Sort of like a reader*s tips opportunity. So speaking of opportunity, there is one very real chance for someone to get a tremendous value here in Courtenay. Advance notice. My friend Neil has a beautiful park like property and house that will be for sale soon. He is presently refurbishing the house but the property is one of only three along Fitzgerald avenue with big trees and it*s the prettiest. 2 cedar, 3-4 Douglas fir and 2 nice big willows. Courtenay may be the most preferred place to live on Vancouver Island. I want to mention this in order to save the trees. Fitzgerald avenue is one of the two main routes across town. Legal and dentist offices are one block away. I hope someone keeps it residential. I fear commercial interests would remove the trees. TG One picture on my site: TonyGuitar.blogspot.com. I shall take a few better shots and post them soon.

3 Headline at National Post: "Comic France shuns as anti-semitic is a hit in Quebec." So, a preacher says homosexuality is a sin, go to jail, pay a fine. But a good old Jew hater, hey, Welcome to Canada! Lovely people.

4 Americans... please note. Do not be offended. There is no general dislike of US citizens in Canada. There is a mistaken thought on the part of the Liberal Party of Canada that Bush bashing gives them that independent feisty quality that Canadians love to vote for. The 1820s have long gone and the combative dislike for American musketeers has long dissipated as well. Please pay no attention to a disgraced and defeated Liberal Party of Canada. I worry that the Liberals may fade away completely. We do need them to split the vote of our National Dipstick Party. The NDP are a sort of socialist / communist mix who would provide every citizen with every service for free. All free services would be paid out of corporate profits and our natural resources. We would all become 450 pound state dependants until the economy crashed. Then we would all enjoy going straight, living on bread and water until we got used to working again. Utopia! TG

5 Ok, enough time slacking off. Here*s some thought shots for grey brains on idle. Talk like that could put hair on the balls of your feet. Be careful! North Korea*s Kimmy NutDong is getting away too much press for pouting and shaking his playpen. That*s not to detract from a good post though. Nutcase ** Madmud Almondjeans** is the real problem here and Lebanon is the potential flashpoint. If radical Islam is to be supressed in favour of a more honest, humane and fair practice of the faith, moderates will have to choose and support a wholesome and moderate leader. There has so far been no leader mentioned who could counter-balance Osama or Muctada al-Sadr... bloodthirsty killers. I asked commentors at: www.MichaelTotten.com who that leader could be and got one possible answer, but can not find much info on him. Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani .. Ever heard of him? Seems Hamas is a faint second string when Hezbollah is around and they are all over South Lebanon on the North Islraeli border. Agents of Iran. Guess **Madmud Almondjeans** is looking for a fight preferably over Lebanon and not over his home base, Iran. TG
