"We did nothing to apologize for."

Oct. 24 - More "religious" riots. So are Egyptians rioting over the release of a DVD of a Christian play or in preparation for elections next month?

According to information gleaned from this CNN account, Four die in DVD-fed Muslim rioting, the rioters have won a partial victory because one of the two Coptic candidates, Maher Khalah, has withdrawn from the parliamentary elections.

But they didn't win the big concession, namely an apology:

"We're not going to apologize because we don't want it to become a precedent," said [Kamil] Sediq of the Coptic Community Council, a secular body of prominent Copts established in 1874 to oversee affairs of the community. "We did nothing to apologize for."
I wish more would follow his example by not apologizing when they've done nothing wrong.

1 The baseline question that press, media and various pundits seem always to overlook, is the curious reasons why reactions to religeous differences result in such a violent expression of rage in Places like Egypt, Lebanon and Malaysia, while in other places public placard carrying and marching seems to to be enough to register protest. Is the government guilty of encouraging this attitude of homicidal blood letting ? Is it just the natural heritage of descending from a nomadic and sometimes plundering culture. It seems amazing to us in the west that muderous bashing of heads in places like Israel for more than thirty years seems not to lead to a different policy after all this time This tends to suggest that outside influences like Syria and Iran find it handy to push their agenda off their property and in someone elses back yard. Once again, if the core problem is not recognized, there can never be a cure where the bombings and killings take place. TG
