March 11

June 19 - A common feature over at Ghost of a Flea has been posts that begin "Now is the time at the Flea when we dance" and then the link is to something weird and/or funny.

There's been another dance going on up here, and it is somehow appropriate that Flea is the one who signals an end to that dance and suggests we confront the potential for a terrorist attack here in Canada right before the June 28 elections in his post titled evocatively March 11.

He's right - if one occurs, we'd best be prepared:

It is important to understand the shock that will ensue if and when Canada is attacked. The feelings of anger that follow could be turned to a resolute determination to stand up for responsible government and liberty. These same feelings can all too easily be twisted. We know what the media elites of this country have done with every story in the last two years of conflict. We can only imagine they will be ready to distort any atrocity to serve their own ends.

We need our arguments ready.

1 no doubt Bush and the Americans would be blamed. The NDP,Bloc, and the Liberals would crawl to the UN asking for sanctions against the US. Panel investigations would ensue. Fill in the rest.

2 Terrorists attack in Canada very probable before the election, and given the fact that former PM Chretien has being visting Iran last week working for PetroKazakhstan (see news clip from http://www.tehrantimes.com/Description.asp?Da=6/19/2004&Cat=9&Num=02 ) you can imagine that there must be other discussions other than oil?

3 We all, of course, hope that any attacks might be prevented. But the experience of last August, when Ontario was affected by the Blackout, does not give much comfort about the overall level of preparedness either. And the confusion displayed by our leaders in the past wouldn't help: remember Mr. Chretien claiming a fire in New York State caused the outage?

4 I guess I'm the only optimist that feels a terrorist attack in Canada might actually wake some people up. These nutcases don't differentiate between Canadians and Americans the way that we insist on doing (and do constantly). The fanatics see the world as being full of two types of people: good, faithful Muslims and infidels, and the infidels must die. I wish that Canadians could do the same, and a terrorist attack here might clue people into that fact. We're #5 on their list (is that higher than Spain was when they were attacked?) and I have no doubt there are Osama sympathizers in our country, not all of which are named Khadr. Am I afraid there may be an attack here? Very. But am I prepared to let that attack scare my country away from opposing these homicidal wackos? Absolutely not. We must be ready to blame them and their supporters for their actions, and be ready to punch out the pacifist morons that blame our American cousins - and God knows we've got plenty of those.

5 Dave brought up last summer's black-out, which to me spoke highly of the ability of Ontarians (and Torontonians in particular) to square their shoulders and endure cheerfully. There's a deep reservoir of strength in Canadians. Not too many months ago I too believed that the association with the USA would be held as the culprit in a terrorist attack, but today I'm not so sure. This federal election campaign has had a lot of surprises for all of us. Who could have guessed 6 months ago, much less a year, that the Consrvative Party would do so well?

6 I think even the worst plausible terrorist attack would be something small scale. The bad guys wouldn't have had much time to prepare for something elaborate, since the Canadian election was only announced a month ago.

7 Ryan, I don't want to sound too alarming but any plans for a terrorist attack in Canada would have been made long ago, with only the time of the attack to be established. But we can't do much about it except be prepared.
